Reading boss Nigel Adkins has urged goalkeeper Alex McCarthy to remain with the relegated club.

Newcastle United and Liverpool are keen on the new England squad member.

Adkins said: "It is important that he is playing. He cannot be sitting on the bench anywhere now.

"He has got to be playing regular football - and he has a great opportunity to do that at Reading.

"There is no reason for him to go anywhere else."
