RB Leipzig striker Werner: Liverpool interest makes me very proud

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner admits he's delighted with interest from Liverpool.

Werner has admitted he is "proud" to be linked with "the best team in the world" Liverpool after scoring the winner against Tottenham on Wednesday evening.

Questioned about rumours linking him with Liverpool, Werner said: "I know that Liverpool is the best team at the moment in the world and when you are linked with that team it makes me very proud.

"It's a pleasure but I know that Liverpool play a lot of good players and I have to improve myself and I need to learn many more things to get to that level and to play there."

On last night's first-leg Champions League round 16 win, Werner insisted afterwards that the job remains far from done with Jose Mourinho's side coming to Leipzig for the second leg in three weeks' time.

He added: "Tottenham are a good team and they showed last year that mentally they can come back in these games and we have to do the same like we did today if we want to progress.

"We have had a good start for the first half of the last-16 clash but we will need to push on."
