RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann has explained turning down Real Madrid earlier in his career.

Nagelsmann admits Real Madrid contact about taking him to Spain, but he says he felt it wasn't the right time to make such a move.

"It's not that I had a contract in front of me ready to sign back then," he recalled to BILD.

"I said it didn't make sense at the time. There were only three weeks left until the start of the preseason and I didn't know any Spanish. It wouldn't have been consistent, neither with my own demand, nor with that of Real.

"It is always convenient to spend several seasons in a club to learn."
