Rangers boss Gerrard open to keeping Bournemouth striker Defoe

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard says he'd be open to Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe joining his backroom staff before he ends his playing career.

Defoe is still banging in the goals at club level - he's scored nine in just seven league goals during his loan this term .

"We are certainly open to that side of Jermain," Gerrard said to the Daily Record. "I can help centre forwards, that's why I'm in the game.

"But Jermain will know certain situations in the game, certain things to look out for in that specific position - better than any coach in the world.

"He has a catalogue of knowledge that he can pass on.

"Whether that ends up being on our staff or elsewhere, I'd love to see him give something back to the game. But he still has so much to offer as a player."
