Former Tottenham and Newcastle United striker Les Ferdinand is in talks with the FA.
Sky Sports says Ferdinand - early favourite to replace Dan Ashworth as the FA's Technical Director - has held initial talks over the role.
The FA announced on Wednesday that after six years Ashworth was to leave at the end of the year, to take up a similar role in the Premier League at Brighton.
Ferdinand - who played 17 times for England - has helped steer QPR through some difficult waters since becoming director of football in February 2015.
