PSV scout Vennegoor of Hesselink driving move for Tottenham defender Alderweireld

PSV Eindhoven scout Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink is driving their move for Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld, it has been revealed.

PSV are being linked with the former Ajax defender this month.

The Belgium international, now 31, has a contract with Spurs to 2023 and spent eight years in Amsterdam with Ajax before leaving.

And local pundit Mike Verweij on the De Telegraaf podcast has offered more details on PSV's approach for Alderweireld.

Quoted by Voetbalzone, he revealed, "Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink has called Toby Alderweireld's agent.

"The situation of Alderweireld has also been very explicitly informed.

"It is an open secret that Toby Alderweireld has reached an age that he might want to return to Antwerp. He has a good relationship, so perhaps some people in the Johan Cruijff ArenA are also waking up, but it is a striking story: PSV has inquired about a former Ajax player, with three very large Andreas crosses on his arm of the city of Amsterdam.

"So that will be a nice sight there."

Indeed, Verwij is convinced Alderweireld would always choose Ajax over PSV should the Amsterdammers make it clear they'd like to bring him back.

He added: "Whether PSV will become a serious option is mainly up to Ajax."

This season, Aldwerweireld has played sixteen times for Spurs, scoring once. In the Premier League, the Belgian has managed 11 appearances.

Meanwhile, Vennegoor of Hesselink has past experience in England, having played a season with Hull City. The Holland centre-forward also enjoyed three successful years with Celtic.
