PSG midfielder Ander Herrera insists the players weren't surprised Kylian Mbappe chose to stay.

Mbappe rejected a move to Real Madrid to sign a new three-year deal with PSG.

Herrera told AS: "People didn't ask him what he was going to do. I was in a similar situation at United, obviously saving all the repercussions, and the teammates leave you alone. In this case it was no different.

"I thought for a long time that he would go to Madrid, but in the end it hasn't been like that. You have to respect the decision of a boy from Paris, born in the suburbs, who couldn't play in PSG's academy because he left for Monaco too soon and who has decided to make history at his city's club.

"We were not surprised by the decision, we were surprised by the timing. We thought it would be a week or ten days later. We are very happy to be able to enjoy what will possibly be the best player of the next ten years.

"I think that at Madrid he was going to be one of the best players in its history for sure and at PSG he could be the best player in the history of the club.

"I repeat. He has decided to make history in his city club. Isn't it true that we would understand Ansu Fati at Barcelona, for example? Let him say that Barcelona is his life. Why don't we understand it with Kylian?"
