Preston North End boss Simon Grayson has confirmed Will Keane has ended his loan and returned to Manchester United.
Grayson confirmed United had cut short the loan deal as they look to bolster their front line.
"[It happened] in the last 24 hours or so. United felt they needed an extra body around them," Grayson told Sky Sports.
"Obviously it's disappointing to lose Will. In the last few weeks he's been finding his feet with us. But that is what happens when you get loan players.
"We accept it. We will probably go into the market over the next few days and weeks to bring in reinforcements. Hopefully he will do well for Manchester United."
Keane has made just one appearance for United's first team - on New Year's Eve 2011 - before loan spells at Wigan, QPR, Sheffield Wednesday and Preston.
And Grayson admits it will be interesting to see if he can answer United's problems in front of goal.
He added: "It's a big step up. But he's played regularly for us, he's fit, so time will tell."
