Premier League preview: Three areas Tottenham must improve before window shuts

With the recent appointment of Portuguese tactician Nuno Espirito Santo, Spurs fans can expect to see some structural changes across their team ahead of the new season.

The former Wolves boss is expected to inject new philosophies and tactics into the locker room - but beyond all of that, Nuno is poised to introduce a new set of players to the squad.

So far, he has already made three new signings in the form of 20-year old dynamic winger Bryan Gil from Sevilla, 26-year-old Goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini from Atalanta, and most recently, defensive stalwart Cristian Romero also from Atalanta.

These three signings are fantastic for Spurs but they don't exactly turn them into title contenders.

There is still quite a bit of room for improvement in Tottenham's squad ahead of the new season.

On that note, here's a look at three areas of the pitch Tottenham could improve and three players they could sign to actualize those improvements.

Striker

With striker Carlos Vinicius not staying at Spurs after his loan spell from Benfica ended, Nuno Espirito Santo will lack a strong pool of strikers to choose from when the season commences.

As things stand, Harry Kane is currently the only natural striker Spurs have within their ranks and considering all the speculation surrounding his stay at the club, he may not be a Tottenham player by the time the transfer window closes.

Kane wants to leave north London this summer

It's also worth noting that even if Kane remains in the team, he might struggle to find the back of the net in the beginning of the season.

After all, Kane is fond of having dry patches in front of goal in the early stages of a new Premier League campaign.

On that note, Spurs need to acquire the services of a new striker for two reasons;

In case Kane leaves, and in case he struggles to score goals at the start of the season.

And considering the current state of the market, there are few relatively affordable players that would fit the bill to bolster Spurs' attack like Napoli's Arkadiusz Milik.

Player to sign: Arkadiusz Milik (Napoli, on loan at Marseille)

Standing at 6'1" tall, Milik boasts a towering frame that allows him to go toe-to-toe with defenders in physical encounters in a similar manner as Harry Kane.

He scored nine goals in 14 starts out on loan at Ligue 1 outfit Marseille last season, and over the years, he has been a consistent performer for Napoli in the Serie A.

It's worth noting that the Polish striker has played in a number of different systems and thus, he should have no trouble adapting under Nuno.

He would be a strong backup option for Tottenham if Harry Kane remains at the club beyond this transfer window.

And even if Kane leaves, Milik would be a solid stop-gap, until Tottenham are able to sign a younger replacement - or perhaps Milik could even replicate Kane's impact at the club.

Centre-Back

Despite Cristian Romero's arrival, Spurs still need to bolster their defence before the end of the transfer window.

Over the course of the last season, Davinson Sanchez often looked shaky - and following Toby Alderweireld's departure, Spurs are in dire need of a strong centre-back.

One player who would be a great option for the role is Sevilla's Jules Kounde.

Player to sign: Jules Kounde (Sevilla CF)

Jules Kounde is well on his way to becoming an elite centre-back.

At just 22-years-old, Kounde is extremely calm and confident on the ball. He typically doesn't make erratic tackles - and he covers passing lanes exceedingly well.

While his ball-playing ability could use a bit of work, Kounde's composure in defence has earned him a direct comparison to Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk.

Should they manage to sign Kounde, Spurs can expect to concede less goals than they did last season.

Central-Midfield

Tottenham's midfield lacks the artistry it needs to compete with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.

Tanguy Ndombele and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are two brilliant players that helped Spurs secure a string of wins last season - however, If Spurs want to launch a viable top four bid this season, they'll need a midfielder who boasts solid ball distribution abilities and positional awareness.

And on that note, there aren't many midfielders better for Spurs than Italy's Manuel Locatelli.

Player to sign:Manuel Locatelli (Sassuolo)

Coming off a brilliant Euros 2020 win with the Italian National team, Manuel Locatelli is one of the most sought after midfielders in Europe at the moment with clubs like Juventus and Arsenal at the front of the race to get his signature.

Tottenham could and should join that race considering the qualities Locatelli could bring to their squad.

He possesses Pirlo-esque decision-making, sublime passing and he's even great at thwarting attacks in the midfield.

He'd be an excellent addition to Tottenham's ranks if they manage to secure his services.
