Premier League Preview: Manchester City vs Liverpool - Team news, Lineups, Prediction

With just one point separating both sides, Manchester City welcomes Liverpool to the Etihad Stadium in a game that could very well determine who will lift the Premier League title at the end of the season.

Manchester City

City's hold on the Premier League title has dwindled over the past few months - with a lone point separating them from second-placed Liverpool.

A 1-1 draw against Southampton in January, a 3-2 loss against Spurs and a 1-0 loss against Crystal Palace - all of which took place in January, February and March respectively put a dent in City's streak of dominance, while also providing Liverpool with an avenue to catch up to the Citizens.

Hence, in a bid to shake Liverpool off their tail, Manchester City need to grab all three points on Sunday.

City go into the tie off the back of a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the first-leg of their Champions League Quarter-Finals game.

Ederson was tested for a total of zero occasions against Atletico as Diego Simone's men put the entirety of their focus on containing City's attacks, however, Ederson should expect to have a busy day against Liverpool on Sunday considering the firepower at the Reds' disposal.

Liverpool

After winning only 69 points last season, Liverpool were met with great furor from the media and their fans alike for putting up one of the worst title defences in recent history.

However, considering the injury problems the club faced throughout the 2020/2021 season, their shambolic displays - while lamentable - were understandable.

Now, with barely any injury problems, Liverpool have been in red-hot form throughout the 2021/2022 season and have already surpassed their points tally from last term with eight games to spare.

The Reds started the season with a 10-game unbeaten run and only lost their first Premier League game in November to West Ham.

Such a run indicated Liverpool were genuine title contenders but the attention on the team was little as their fellow "top 4" rivals Chelsea occupied the top spot in the standings with an even better run of form.

But as time has passed, both Liverpool and Manchester City have leapfrogged Chelsea to occupy the 1st and 2nd spots respectively.

Since the loss against West Ham in November, Liverpool have gone on an outstanding run losing just once in 19 matches.

Liverpool's run makes them the team with the fewest losses in the league thus far but their lack of grit in relatively easy games has seen them share the spoils on too many occasions which leaves them a point behind Manchester City on the table.

Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have made comments commending each other on their tactical approaches to games and the psychological warfare could play a big part in tomorrow's fixture.

The Reds' German boss currently possesses a plethora of attacking talent which could see him leave out names like Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota from the starting lineup.

A win against Manchester City would help Liverpool climb to first place and maintain a 2-point lead so Klopp may pull out all the stops to secure all three points.

Both teams are coming off of big wins in their midweek Champions League fixtures but if their last 5 previous meetings are anything to go by, then it's bound to be a difficult game for Liverpool.

Klopp will surely be looking to Mohamed Salah, who is currently going through a rut, to rediscover his form against City, as Liverpool will need a few moments of brilliance against the Citizens in a bid to claim three points at the Etihad.

Manchester City Team News

Guardiola will have a full squad to choose from ahead of the clash against Liverpool bar Ruben Dias who remains out of contention due to a hamstring injury he suffered back in March.

Liverpool Team News

With Trent Alexander-Arnold back from his injury problem, Liverpool don't have any pressing injury concerns going into the tie against City.

However, Naby Keita's availability is under slight doubt following a recent knee issue - but considering he played close to 90 minutes in Liverpool's Champions League Quarter-Final tie, then he may be fit enough to feature against City.

Manchester City possible starting lineup:

Ederson; Walker, Stones, Laporte, Cancelo; Silva, Rodri, De Bruyne; Mahrez, Foden, Sterling

Liverpool possible starting lineup:

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago; Salah, Mane, Diaz

Prediction

Liverpool and City's first encounter of the season ended in an entertaining 2-2 draw - and considering how evenly matched both sides currently are - their second encounter of the season has all the makings of another high-scoring draw.
