PREMIER LEAGUE: Liverpool get some FA Cup revenge with home win over Chelsea

Liverpool have exacted some revenge over Chelsea with a 4-1 win at Anfield to help them climb up to eighth on the Premier League table.

The Reds were beaten by the Blues in the FA Cup final on Saturday but managed to turn that result around by scoring three goals in the opening half-hour to produce a comfortable victory over the Champions League finalists.

The scoring was opened in the 19th minute when Luis Suarez produced a great run down the right touchline before cutting in after a nutmeg on John Terry then putting the ball across goal to see it deflect in off Michael Essien.

Six minutes later, Stewart Downing played a ball in for Jordan Henderson with Terry slipping as the midfielder took possession before he advanced into the area and finished neatly past Chelsea number two keeper Ross Turnbull.

It went from bad to worse for Roberto Di Matteo's men in the 29th minute when Andy Carroll got on the end of Jonjo Shelvey's corner from the left to head it back into the goal-face for Daniel Agger to stoop and nod home a bouncing ball.

In stoppage time of the first half, referee Kevin Friend pointed to the spot when Branislav Ivanovic clattered into Carroll on the left side of the area from Henderson's angled cross from the right. Stewart Downing stepped up to make it 4-0 but hammered his penalty attempt into the left upright with Carroll putting the follow-up wide. It was the fifth of six missed from the spot in the league by the Reds this season.

Five minutes into the second half, Chelsea pulled one back when Florent Malouda's free-kick from the right was missed by the Reds defenders with the ball falling to Ramires who knocked it on target with his stomach with Pepe Reina unable to keep it out with his feet.

Just after the hour-mark, Liverpool grabbed a fourth when Turnbull's poor clearance was controlled by Shelvey who then struck sweetly from about 30 yards for his first Premier League goal.

The win was a great finish to the season for Liverpool at Anfield after a fairly mediocre set of performances at home in the league whilst the loss resigned sixth-placed Chelsea to their lowest finish in a decade.
