A winter break could be introduced for the Premier League by 2020, according to Sky Sports.
The league hierarchy is said to be content with plans to introduce a 'split-round' system that will allow clubs to enjoy a 13-day break.
This means that there will still be no weekend without Premier League football. Only 10 clubs will play one weekend, and the remaining 10 on the following weekend.
Now it is up to the Football Association as to whether they will make the historic decision to scrap FA Cup fifth-round replays in order for the winter-break to be approved.
The EFL are unable to pursue the same initiative as they need every weekend to fit in their 46 game quota.
