Poyet exclusive: Timing everything for Pochettino to manage Real Madrid

Former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Gus Poyet has backed Mauricio Pochettino to get back into management with one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Speaking in an interview with Tribal Football, Poyet said that once the timing was right the former Spurs would find himself in one of the biggest jobs in the game.

The Argentine was sacked by Spurs earlier this season despite leading them to the top four three years in a row, as well as the Champions League final last May.

When asked about Pochettino's future, Poyet said: "Sometimes you need timing.

"I remember they were talking about him when Zinedine Zidane left Real Madrid and now Zidane is back.

"If that was the option then you're going to have to wait and I don't think Mauricio will want to wait too long. As soon as one of the big clubs loses their manager Pochettino will be there or thereabouts.

"He should be the first name, maybe Max Allegri and Pochettino, the top two now who go into the next big job."

Poyet spent three years at Spurs as a player before managing both Brighton & Hove Albion and Sunderland.

The former Uruguay international left his last job at Bordeaux in 2018 and is now working as a pundit with LaLigaTV.

Since leaving Spurs, Pochettino has said he wants to spent a little period away from football in order to spend time with his family and has admitted he will likely return to the sport in the summer.
