Poyet eager for Sunderland to hand Cattermole new terms

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet is keen to secure Lee Cattermole to a new deal.

Poyet has tipped Cattermole for England honours over his impressive midfield form this season.

The Sun says Sunderland are now ready to open contract talks with Cattermole.

The midfielder's current deal runs to 2016 and Poyet wants to tie him down to a longer agreement.

Poyet said: "I think normally when it's a player who is playing week-in, week-out, depending on the age, most clubs will starting talking about it with 18 months to go.

"That's so you don't get into the last year.

"But there's two sides to it remember."
