Potter urges Brighton to move on quickly after Crystal Palace smash and grab victory

Crystal Palace secured the ultimate smash and grab in a 2-1 win over fierce rivals Brighton at the AMEX on Monday night.

Jean-Philippe Mateta brilliantly flicked in the opener for Palace after 28 minutes.

But Albion deservedly found an equaliser ten minutes after half-time thanks to Joel Veltman's sweeping left-foot strike.

The hosts dominated with 75 per cent possession but were ultimately punished for spurning a number of decent chances.

Palace, with just their second shot on target for the game, were able to find a winner deep in stoppage time through Christian Benteke, with the Belgian dispatching an excellent volley past Roberto Sanchez.

Having seen his side take 25 shots in the match, it was no surprise that Graham Potter smashed a bottle in anger.

The Seagulls are just points above the drop zone, while Palace are ten points from 18th-placed Fulham.

And speaking after the game, Albion boss Graham Potter urged his players to move on quickly from the disappointing defeat.

"It is difficult, a very sore one, we did everything but get the points and that's the most important thing so we are very disappointed," said Potter.

"They were in our box I think twice and scored two, that is the beauty of football but it doesn't feel so beautiful at the moment, it feels painful. It was a one-sided game in terms of pressure but they scored two, so that's life.

"I didn't think we did so much wrong in the first half, the goal is from one action at our half and you have to respond, which we did, pushed and pushed and thought we were going to win the game - players are distraught but it is part of life and football and we have to deal with it because we have a game at the weekend.

"In terms of chances created, what we looked like in the game, I was happy with the performance, we need to do a little bit more and I have to keep working on that. We have been on an unbeaten run, we have to respond now, it's not going to go your way all the time, you have to respond. That's the job."
