John Utaka has revealed how Nwankwo Kanu convinced him to choose Portsmouth ahead of Manchester City and Newcastle United.
"Manchester City and Newcastle were interested but when we played for Nigeria against Uganda in June, he told me Portsmouth would be a good team to join. He looks after me.
"I was a fan of Ajax when Kanu was there, back when I never thought I'd even be leaving Nigeria. I followed them when he was in Holland and I can't believe I've ended up playing in the same club team as him. It's a dream come true."
In return, Utaka convinced Kanu to remain at the club and form a formidable strike partnership.
"I told him I'd like him to stay," he said. "Kanu knows the way I play and I know the way he plays, so it makes things easier."
