Portsmouth keeper James sympathises for England rival Green

Portsmouth goalkeeper David James had sympathy for West Ham's Robert Green after his dismissal in England's defeat to Ukraine.

James came on after the dismissal of Green and was outstanding on the night.

The 39 year-old said: "Given the circumstances, with Rio the covering defender, you would have hoped Greeny wouldn't have been sent off but he has unfortunately.

"Fortunately I had done my preparations the last few days and was ready for the game when I had to go on.

"I was taping my fingers up, the ring beneath my gloves. The ref showed the red card to Rio first of all so I wasn't sure if it was chance for me to go on.

"I was prepared to go on and you have to be prepared to go on in the first minute. I felt ready although I have never had to come off the bench and face a penalty before."
