Portsmouth boss Steve Cotterill is hoping veteran striker Kanu's future is resolved this week, freeing him to play for the Championship club. Kanu, who has been at Pompey for the past four years, but has not played this season after failing to agree terms at Fratton Park.
"Maybe something could happen with King (Kanu) in the week," said Pompey's boss.
"If his contract gets sorted out, that would give us another body. We need that sort of clever player.
"I can't make any other great strides until we can get ourselves a squad together that can be competitive.
"I don't want to worry about an injury and I want to get in one of the formations we want to use."
Finally, Cotterill is playing down reports the club could sign Manchester United winger Gabriel Obertan despite the Frenchman being spotted among fans in their 1-0 defeat at Preston.
"I don't know what Obertan was doing there," he added. "At the end of the day, why would he sit in with the Pompey crowd if we were signing him?"
