Portsmouth boss Adams determined to get best from "free spirit" Utaka

Portsmouth boss Tony Adams is determined to help John Utaka reach his potential.

He said: "John is a free spirit and can be hugely frustrating, but at times I've seen him through the middle for Rennes and on his day could score goals. At the moment I still don't know if he can play up front for us and that's the honest answer.

"It's up to John, maybe there could be opportunities for him. At times last season on the right in a 4-3-3 he was really effective for us so I'm not going to throw John out just yet. I think he deserves more time and I think he will be very useful at some stage.

"But I'm not too sure how much the fans and me can tolerate, so he's got to be quick. I saw the crowd were getting a little bit on to his back on Saturday and I can understand that.

"Benjani was really popular here because he ran around and worked hard. He was limited, but he showed the crowd he was a 100-per-cent man. At times you look at John and don't think he's maybe doing that but it's his character, he can come to life.

"I remember when he got the ball in the first half on the left-hand side, jinxed past a couple of people and put a great ball up for Peter (Crouch) and then Diop missed the chance. There is talent in the guy."
