Porto president: Brazil coach Tite key to Alex Telles leaving for Man Utd

Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa admits some frustration losing Alex Telles to Manchester United.

The Brazil left-back joined United on deadline day a fortnight ago on Monday. Telles had been subject of interest from United for much of the summer and Porto eventually relented in the final hours of the transfer window.

With the defender inside the final 12 months of his contract at Porto, Pinto da Costa admits they were in a difficult situation. But the Porto supremo insists their cause would have been strengthened if not for Brazil coach Tite and his reluctance to scout players playing in Portugal.

Da Costa conceded on TVI via O Jogo: "I am never satisfied when a good player leaves.

"Look, a big sale that I was disgusted with was Hulk and it was a big deal. There are times when we have no other solution. One week before the close of the market, he asked to leave because he wanted to go to Manchester.

"I tried for him not to go, I tried to compensate him even if he stayed until the end of the year.

"With Alex it was not a problem to negotiate. The argument for leaving is that the current coach of Brazil (Tite) only called players from three to four championships. I tried to argue against that because he is currently in the Selecao."

Telles was part of Tite's squad for the last international round and was included in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United squad for the trip to Newcastle United on Saturday. However, the Brazilian left-back took in the 4-1 win from the bench.

At Porto, Telles spent four years making over 120 appearances.
