Pochettino admits Tottenham must sell stars to reach next level

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino says the club must be ready to sell players who are not integral to the team.

With another transfer window of no incomings, it is clear that funds are tight at Spurs.

And given they must keep top players such as Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen happy, it is a balancing act for the boss and his chairman Daniel Levy.

Spurs have struggled with injuries and squad depth in recent weeks, crashing out of the Carabao and FA Cups in quick succession.

"To be successful or win titles, you always need to improve," Pochettino said in his press conference.

"You can't keep doing the same, and in every transfer window, you need to say, 'Okay, how can I improve the team?'

"Sometimes it's about improving your structure, your facilities and sometimes it's a moment to invest in the team.

"But sometimes — and it's so painful — you need to say, 'OK, I love this player, he helped us arrive at this level but now, if we are going to achieve another level, we need to improve and we need to bring in another player.

"The only way we can reach the next level, and win titles, is by improving, improving, improving.

"We're all getting older. The players can get more mature but at some point, they need another challenge, another experience, another goal, as always happens in life, and we need to be open to improve."
