Pierre-Emile Højbjerg: Sorry to fans and to Southampton FC

Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has apologised to fans after their 6-1 thrashing by Manchester City.

The midfielder admitted he found it tough to express his feelings on the game, and is already looking ahead to a return to St Mary's next Saturday when Saints host Watford.

“We feel terrible," he said.

“I can only say, again, thank you and sorry to the supporters and sorry to Southampton Football Club.

“It's not easy to stand here and talk. There are some things you automatically have to say and some things you are not allowed to say.

“It is difficult to put the game in words. You get emotional, you get frustrated, you get disappointed – you need to turn it around and use it as fire and use it as fuel to go forward and give everything next Saturday for a win.

“We take responsibility for what we do, take it on the chin and grow with it.

“Tomorrow we will be in again and work on what we have to do better."
