Petke pens new NYRB contract

New York Red Bulls have announced that head coach Mike Petke has signed a new deal with the club.

The 38-year old took the reins at the Red Bull Arena in January 2013 and after guiding the team to the Supporters' Shield title last season, has penned a fresh contract. Per club regulations, specific terms of the deal were not disclosed.

A former defender and assistant coach with the Red Bulls, Petke admitted it was a great thrill to commit himself to the New York cause.

"I am pleased to reach a new deal with my hometown club," Petke said in a club statement.

"We have enjoyed success during my short time as head coach and all of the credit goes to our players, staff and most importantly, our supporters.

"While winning the Supporters' Shield was a major achievement for our club last year, my overall goal of building a team with a long-term identity that our fans can be proud of remains unchanged. I look forward to continuing this mission in the 2014 season and beyond."

The Red Bulls lost their 2014 MLS season opener 4-1 to Vancouver Whitecaps on the weekend but get the chance to atone when they take on the Colorado Rapids at home on Saturday.
