Peterborough admit they missed out on Arsenal's Simpson

Young Arsenal striker Jay Simpson was keenly sought after by Peterborough earlier this month but the club has admitted they did not get their man.

20-year old Simpson is expected to join West Brom in a loan deal which will possibly see him play against Peterborough in an FA Cup tie this weekend as director of football Barry Fry explained.

"We won't be getting the striker we wanted and he will most probably be playing against us at the weekend (for West Brom)," he told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph.

"Jay is a cracking young talent who (Peterborough boss) Darren (Ferguson) identified about 18 months ago. He has had a few games for Arsenal and did well when he was at Millwall.

"Arsenal weren't prepared to loan him out until they were knocked out of the Carling Cup and we were first in the queue when that happened.

"Unfortunately for us, clubs like West Brom, Derby and Norwich came on the scene and, when that happened, understandably the lad wasn't interested in coming here."
