Palace striker Gayle happy with wide role

Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle had no problem playing wide in defeat to Arsenal.

The striker tops the Eagles goal charts with 10 in all competitions and has 18 in 48 outings for the South London club since joining them from Peterborough.

Gayle told the South London Press: "Going wide allows me not to be picked up by the centre-backs when I'm coming in - I'm unsighted and can sneak in. I can help the team out with goals and crosses and getting back in defending.

"It wasn't one of my best performances - I was a bit frustrated with my deliveries but the team pressed really well.

"We did exactly what the manager asked - stopped them playing.

"It was probably our best performance but the shame was we didn't get anything out of it. We were just a bit unfortunate that a few decisions didn't go our way.

"The fact we are disappointed shows the ambition of the team. We think we can beat anyone - which is a good sign."
