Former Germany star Mesut Ozil has stated that France lost the World Cup final to Argentina for one specific reason.

Ozil, who won the tournament in 2014 with Germany, spoke after a dramatic final that saw Argentina win on penalties.

After the game went to 3-3 after extra time, the South Americans were more assured from the spot.

Ozil chose to highlight the absence of French and Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema from their squad as the reason for their failure.

Ozil, an ex-Real teammate of Benzema's, tweeted after the game: “No Benzy, No Party."

Benzema was injured on the eve of the World Cup, resulting in his departure from the squad.
