Relieved Oldham boss Paul Dickov saw his side end their barren run in cup competitions as they edged Scunthorpe 1-0 in the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. Striker Shefki Kuqi got the only goal of the game in the 27th minute to give the Latics their first cup win in any competition since August 2008.
"Regardless of how we played I'm over the moon that we've managed to win a cup tie," Dickov said. "I was desperate for us to do well in this competition.
"I don't think we were lucky, but I have to say it was a hard-fought win for us. We put ourselves under a bit of pressure in the last 15 minutes against a very good Scunthorpe side.
"We had to show a lot of character and fight and I thought our two central defenders and the goalkeeper were magnificent. We defended well and that was what we had to do to get us through the game."
