Southampton stoppage-time equaliser prevents Man Utd moving to third

Manchester United missed the chance to go third after allowing Southampton to score a 96th minute equaliser on Tuesday.

The Red Devils failed to defend a corner right at the death as Jan Bednarek's flick was met by Michael Obafemi to bundle in the winner.

Saints had taken an early lead at Old Trafford after Paul Pogba was dispossessed in his own half by Shane Long.

The ball was then picked up by the electric Nathan Redmond who clipped a sumptuous cross to the back post for an unmarked Stuart Armstrong to fire past David De Gea.

Pogba redeemed himself only seven minutes later when his curling pass found Anthony Martial in the box.

The in-form Frenchman held up like a stone wall and fended off the Saints defender before offloading a deft pass to Marcus Rashford to finish clinically past Alex McCarthy.

Martial turned from provider to scorer three minutes later when he put United ahead with a goal which was emblematic of the confidence he has found since the restart.

Picking the ball up from Bruno Fernandes on the left-wing, the 24-year-old gathered speed like a freight train, and with Kyle Walker-Peters making the fateful mistake of backing off, Martial cut in on his right and blasted it past McCarthy.

Ralph Hasenhuttl's side pushed for an equaliser and United were forced to crawl over the line as they sought to move from fifth to third place after Chelsea and Leicester City both lost on the weekend.

That was until the final piece of action of the game as they failed to track Bednarek and Obafemi was there ahead of Victor Lindelof to score a deserved equaliser for the visitors.
