Norwich manager Smith furious with 'pathetic' Newcastle penalty

Norwich City manager Dean Smith has slammed Newcastle's penalty on Tuesday as "pathetic".

Despite being a man down, the Magpies went ahead 1-0 thanks to a penalty from Callum Wilson after Billy Gilmour handled the box inside the box.

But Smith was unhappy with the decision when speaking after the game.

He told reporters: "We're frustrated. I'd have preferred Teemu to go straight through and score the goal. We had to change our game plan a little bit and they were always going to try and kill the game at every opportunity.

"We knew we were going to have the lion's share of possession. We went more with a diamond to get the full-backs a little bit higher, but the quality of our runs wasn't good enough.

"They got a dubious penalty which lifted the crowd and gave them something to hold onto."

On Newcastle's penalty, he continued: "We've taken all responsibility away from the on-pitch official. He didn't feel it was unnatural. If it takes him 90 seconds to see whether it's close enough – it's pathetic for me.

"We've managed to go three unbeaten, but we feel we've lost two points here today, given the circumstances."
