NHL owner has ambitions for MLS franchise in Las Vegas

Bill Foley, owner of the National Hockey League's (NHL) Vegas Golden Knights, has confirmed that he is keen leading a fresh bid to bring a Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion franchise to Las Vegas, reports, www.sportspromedia.com/.

Reports last week revealed that the Las Vegas city council was in discussions about having a potential MLS team play at a renovated Cashman Field, home of the United Soccer League's (USL) Las Vegas Lights.

However, speaking to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Foley said he wants to place a top-tier North American soccer team at either the Oakland Raiders' new National Football League (NFL) stadium or on an alternative site to be determined.

"I'm very interested in this and we are working on making it happen," Foley told the Review-Journal. "I think soccer is the new football for many parents who don't want their children playing [tackle football]. I think we could be just as successful with soccer as we have been with hockey. We have all the infrastructure in place to make it very successful.

"I believe the Raiders stadium would be the best venue, but if that didn't work, would consider (building) a soccer-specific stadium. I've already been shown some sites where it could work."

Foley did not disclose details of discussions he has had with Raiders owner Mark Davis, who this week told the Review-Journal that an MLS team would be welcome at the football franchise's new home to help generate revenue outside of the NFL season.

"We have 365 days a year to fill in the stadium," Davis said. "We will be using it for eight [regular-season] dates plus, hopefully, all our play-off games. So that leaves around 353, and then there is [UNLV football].

"Major League Soccer and other events would be at the top off our list to help fill those remaining dates. We are open to listening to anything. We owe that to ourselves and the community."
