Newcastle's Barton "devastated" after injury

Joey Barton admits he's devastated after being ruled out for six weeks at Newcastle United due a foot injury.

Barton was being operated on yesterday after he limped off in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Carlisle United at Brunton Park and was forced to hand the skipper's armband to Nobby Solano.

And he told the Evening Chronicle: "I am absolutely gutted and devastated and it is all extremely frustrating. but unfortunately this is all part and parcel of modern day football.

"It would be foolish to set a date on any comeback and all I can say is that I want to get back as quickly as possible, and when I do get back make sure that I am 100% fit.

"Obviously, it's a blow to me and to the manager, but I am more disappointed for our supporters than anything else.

"The United fans have been fantastic to me since I came here from Manchester City and I was desperate to be part of the team on the opening day at Bolton which, of course, I won't be now."
