Newcastle United are waiting on a response from Boca Juniors after making an offer for Alan Varela.

The Argentine midfielder has attracted recent enquiries from Barcelona, Benfica and Ajax ahead of this month's market.

But TMW says Newcastle have sought to beat all rivals with a cash offer of €18m for the defensive midfielder.

Varela has been likened to Barcelona captain Sergi Busquets and Boca are willing to sell in the coming weeks.

For the moment, Boca are assessing Newcastle's proposal.
