Newcastle U21 coach Dickman happy with goalscorer Miley (16)

Newcastle United U21 coach Elliott Dickman is delighted with the attitude of 16 year-old prospect Lewis Miley.

Dickman hailed the teenager after he scored his first goal for the second-string in the Premier League Cup defeat to Sheffield United on Monday.

Miley is quickly becoming one to watch within Newcastle's academy, and was recent rewarded for his development with the Jack Hixon award. The 16-year-old has started two of the last three U21s fixture, and opened his account for Dickman's side with a header from a clever set-piece routine at Glanford Park.

Dickman told ChronicleLive: "I'm delighted for him. The pleasing thing is with Lewis, we ask him to do a role and certain things in and out of possession, and his game understanding and knowledge of what we're asking is really positive.

"He takes that on board, he listens to the information and instructions. It sounds really simple and straightforward to say he's listening and taking it on board, but he's done that really well in the games he's played for the U21s.

"That's a positive thing that he's obviously prepared to take that on board, it's really important. There's parts of your development, there might be things you might not be happy to do but we're asking you to do it, and the understanding he shows that he's got to do that which is the best for the team.

"There's bits that we ask him to do which is also going to help him, that's probably been the big plus from today. He took the ball and handles it really well, but we've asked him to do things out of possession and he's done that really well. That's good from a coaching point of view, the fact he's coachable and he's willing to listen and really keen to learn."
