Newcastle transfer plans deadlocked as Benitez and Ashley at loggerheads

Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has rejected new contract talks.

The Mirror says Benitez is refusing to sign a new contract at Newcastle until Mike Ashley commits significant money to the first-team squad, training ground and academy pitches.

But Ashley will not invest serious sums in any of those areas before Benitez puts pen to paper to commit his own future to the club.

The stances the pair are taking have created a standoff which is causing this summer's recruitment malaise.

Benitez desperately wants to strengthen his squad but knows he is operating on a sell-to-buy or loan-only policy as things stand.

Deals for West Brom striker Salomon Rondon and Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend are set to remain on the back burner until something gives.
