Newcastle to leave Benitez hanging over new contract plans

Newcastle United may wait until July to discuss a new contract with Rafa Benitez.

The Evening Chronicle says they're likely to return to Benitez for a fresh conversation about his contract before pre-season kicks off in July.

Benitez is yet to sign an extension to his existing deal, but has made it clear he will not break his current contract and walk away from United before the end of the 2018/19 season.

However, there is still an uneasy feeling around St James' Park for the supporters who would ideally like to see Benitez sign a new deal and start planning for the long-term future.

United also need to be able to have Benitez on board in the long-term in order to help them land certain targets this summer, especially given Newcastle have a policy of handing out five-year deals.
