Newcastle taking legal action against Premier League

Newcastle United are preparing legal action against the Premier League.

The Magpies are furious their takeover bid from a Saudi-backed consortium was not approved by the league.

It is also alleged that the Premier League broke a confidentiality clause related to the takeover.

The PL allegedly leaked details about their deliberations of the takeover to a supporters group.

The Saudi-backed consortium eventually backed out of the deal in June.

Newcastle Consortium Supporters Ltd told the Shields Gazette: "Bird & Bird [attorneys for the Premier League] has confirmed that the club is currently in a legal dispute with the EPL regarding the proposed acquisition, which may lead to a duplication of the issues raised by the fans consortium.

"The EPL has said it would therefore be premature for us to bring our claim now."

The NCSL had wanted to bring their own legal disputing saying the prospective owners were not fit and proper, but the Premier League beat them to the punch.

The Premier League is not commenting on the story, per theBBC.

Newcastle commented: "The source of some of the reporting is said to be the EPL. It appears, therefore, that the EPL has leaked the contents of their letter to some of those commenting in the public domain.

"The club understands that these will be matters of great concern to its fans and therefore considers that, in light of the information disclosed by the EPL, it has no choice but to respond and update its fans in response to this coverage."
