Newcastle United are interested in Lille midfielder Thiago Maia.

Le 10 Sport says Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is a fan of Maia and wants to bring him to England this summer.

An opening bid from Newcastle has already been tabled - though Lille turned it down. The amount was not disclosed.

Newcastle are expected to return with a new bid in the coming days.

Lille have made it clear they will only consider selling at a much higher price than what Newcastle offered.
