Newcastle seek knockdown deal for Celtic striker Samaras

Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton hopes to snap up Celtic striker Georgios Samaras for a knockdown fee.

The Daily Record says Toon chairman Mike Ashley has confirmed there will only be a small amount of money to spend despite Newcastle's recent promotion to the Premiership United are desperate to add firepower to their ranks with their squad's strike force only comprising Peter Lovenkrands, Andy Carroll and Shola Ameobi.

Hughton is not in the position to go out and splash £10million on a striker .

Samaras, though, will cost far less and the Hoops hierarchy may be willing to accept £1.5m for the Greek who is currently on World Cup duty in South Africa.
