Newcastle's Carver: Cisse good enough to 'play with just one leg'

Newcastle United boss John Carver was yet again thrilled with Papiss Cisse after he scored the only goal against Aston Villa on Saturday.

The Senegal international struck in the 37th minute at St James' Park to give the Magpies a 1-0 victory, tallying his 11th goal in just his 10th Premier League start, and delighting Carver in the process.

Cisse has been battling a knee problem this season but Carver feels he is good enough touch to hit the back of the net whenever he wants despite his issues.

"If he keeps getting in the right spot then he might be able to play with just one leg," said the Toon boss.

"But we are having to manage him and deal with his situation."

Carver was often in Cisse's corner when he was struggling with fitness during Alan Pardew's reign and admits he had confidence that the former Freiburg man would snap out of a dry spell after netting just twice in 24 outings last season.

"I always believed in him even when he wasn't scoring," he added.

"It's all about staying with the player in the barren times. I always told him he would come through that, and he has."
