Newcastle United boss Joe Kinnear will compete with Blackburn Rovers for Manchester City defender Tal Ben Haim.
City boss Mark Hughes is ready to dump the Israel international this month and both Rovers and Newcastle are keen to keep the ex-Chelsea defender in the Premiership.
Rovers are regarded as favourites due to Sam Allardyce's relationship with Ben Haim from their days together at Bolton Wanderers.
