Newcastle lining up bid for Chelsea fullback Marcos Alonso

Newcastle United are lining up a bid for Chelsea fullback Marcos Alonso.

Toon owner Mike Ashley has agreed to sell the club to PCP Capital Partners, an organisation backed by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.

The Daily Star says Alonso could be their first summer signing.

They say Newcastle's new owners have told intermediaries to tell Chelsea of their interest in the left-back.

Alonso, who spent half a season on loan in the north east at Sunderland, has three years remaining on his current Stamford Bridge contract.

The Spaniard's future under Frank Lampard is up in the air, with the Chelsea boss eyeing Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell.

Chilwell's arrival would see Alonso pushed down the pecking order in west London.

The defender could then opt to head to St James' Park if they can guarantee him regular game time.
