Newcastle United icon Malcolm MacDonald says Andy Carroll and Steven Taylor are both capable of being major England stars.

But Supermac feels that only the United pair's application next season can make their dreams of becoming fully fledged England stars a reality.

He told the Evening Chronicle: "As they stand, they could be watching the next major tournament on TV too.

"It's really down to how determined they are - but they have got over the first hurdle by helping Newcastle get back into the Premier League.

"That was vital because Capello will not consider you seriously if you're playing Championship football. Both Andy and Steven have to set their sights as high as possible this season.

"They've got to be consistent and catch the eye, and force their way into the fold and try to get into the squads for the qualifiers for the Euros.

"It can be done and it's achievable, but I think they've got to work extremely hard and remember that they are both Newcastle's future and prize assets."
