Carroll is eyeing the legendary jersey next season and Chris Hughton would not be averse to giving the homegrown forward a role synonymous with striking legends Jackie Milburn, Malcolm Macdonald and Alan Shearer.
"Andy is a key man this season," Moncur told the Evening Chronicle. "He has come a long way in the last 18 months and if Newcastle are going to stay up with a bit to spare, they're going to need someone scoring a minimum of 10 to 15 goals. Carroll can be that man.
"Does he deserve the number nine? Well, he's the first-choice striker at the moment.
"The number nine shirt has a bit of history but it's just a number. If he's good enough to play centre-forward in the top division for Newcastle United then he's good enough to get the number the way I see it. I know there are loads of famous people who have worn it through the years who have done very well. But there are plenty who haven't set the world alight as well, so he shouldn't feel too much pressure putting it on.
"I think it helps that he has someone alongside him like Peter Løvenkrands who has a good footballing brain. I think he's a really underrated player, he makes the runs which give Andy space."
