Newcastle United legend Peter Beardsley is delighted seeing Jonas Gutierrez succeed with Argentina.

The Toon winger has been played at right-back by coach Diego Maradona at the World Cup.

Beardsley told the Evening Chronicle: "Jonas is there on merit and I think it's fantastic. It's not like Diego Maradona is doing him a favour - Jonas is an integral part of the team.

"He's massive for the team and it's essential that he's there. He was the stand-out player for us last season and I know he will make a massive impact.

"I think he's a brilliant player - I love his attitude and his energy and he is a credit to the Newcastle team."
