The 19 year-old has just completed successful trials with Newcastle.

The Evening Chronicle says the club are in talks with the player's representatives over a deal.

Given the defender's age, it is likely he would at first join up with the under-23 squad.

The South African spent two years with Schalke's U19 squad, featuring in the UEFA Youth League; the U19 version of the UEFA Champions League.
