Newcastle hero Given hails leadership of Howe: Emery was first choice, but now...

Newcastle United legend Shay Given believes manager Eddie Howe has set the ideal tone at the club.

The Magpies had their choice of coaches when they appointed Howe more than a year ago, including now Aston Villa boss Unai Emery.

Despite Emery's impressive start at Villa, which saw them beat Newcastle at the weekend, Given is delighted the Magpies have Howe.

"At the same time he says the right things at the right time. He captains the fans, not saying we're not going to do this," Given told BT Sport.

"He says we're going to come out today, try and win the game and keep pushing and pushing. He's also said in the past why not dream of Champions League? Why not dream of trophies? He just gets the tone perfect."

Given added: "I don't think too many Newcastle fans are complaining about Eddie Howe. Yes, we know Unai Emery was the first choice, he was the Villarreal manager, they had Champions League football and he didn't want to leave that job.

"So I think at the end of the day, you look around at both clubs, Aston Villa will be happy with their manager and of course Newcastle are really, really happy with Eddie Howe."
