Newcastle defender Fernandez: Saint-Maximin different in training compared to matchday

Newcastle United defender Fede Fernandez has sung the praises of teammate Allan Saint-Maximin.

Saint-Maximin has been a positive for Newcastle in a disappointing start to the season. And the winger's growing reputation has reached Spain.

Fernandez told AS: "He's a cute character! People love his ability and his imbalance, but in training he is a very calm boy. In addition, he is young and has a big future ahead of him."

On the club's recent takeover, Fernandez insists the new board and ambitions can be good for their young players. Rather than being crowded out by incoming talent, Fernandez says the new spending power will help convince their best young players to stay with the Magpies.

The Argentine said: "This situation will also influence the young players of the club because instead of jumping to a bigger club after having done well here, they will now have the possibility of seeing a future at Newcastle.

"It also could be the other way around: that important players come here."

Defeat on Sunday at home to Tottenham marked Newcastle's first game under their new owners. The 3-1 reverse left the Toon second from bottom on the Premier League table. Newcastle are a clear three points away from safety.

Meanwhile, Fernandez, now 32, has managed five appearances this season. He has a contract with Newcastle to 2023.
