Bruce stepped in for Rafa Benitez in the summer and has guided Toon to 10th place on the Premier League table after 16 games.
When asked about Bruce's progress Charnley said - via the Chronicle: "I'm really impressed.
"It was tough for him at the beginning by his own admission.
"We had a challenging fixture list and had to deal with a lot of criticism.
"There was an acceptance from my side and his side that it would take a little bit of time to change the narrative and the dialogue.
"I think what we are seeing now is both Steve and the players getting some of the credit they deserve for the performances and positive results on the field.
"I think he's handled himself really well."
