Shearer told the Evening Chronicle: "I left Kevin out, and he was disappointed, and rightly so.
"I think it says a lot about him and his character, and the measure of the man, that he could have gone away and sulked and had the huff, but he didn't.
"He went away, knuckled down and got his head down, and proved he wanted to play a big part in Newcastle United's survival.
"He certainly played his part against Middlesbrough. I thought he was magnificent.
"I'll be looking for him to do exactly the same against Villa."
