Newcastle boss Howe insists Wilson had 'very strong shout for penalty'

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe felt that his side were unfortunate not to be given a penalty during the 0-0 draw with Manchester United.

The Magpies were in with a chance of winning the game for much of the contest, but had to resort to deep defending in the last 15 minutes.

Despite the late onslaught from the home side, Newcastle did have their share of chances at Old Trafford, especially in the first half.

Speaking post-game about a possible penalty for a Raphael Varane foul on Callum Wilson, Howe stated: "I've watched it back very quickly. I thought it was a very strong shout for a penalty.

"It looked like as Callum was running and caught the lad's calf. I've seen them given on another day."

For their part, Man United also felt they were denied a couple of penalties in the game, with their coach Erik ten Hag furious with the officials post-game.

Asked about the refs, he said post-game: "I don't have a comment. You have all seen it."
